Pest Days of Summer

Pests want to beat the summer heat too! During the summer months, you will see pests starting to enter your home to get away from the outside elements. With the continuous afternoon rains and extreme heat, Florida tends to have the most issues with pests invading homes.

The two most common pests are roaches and ants:

Why are these pests so harmful?

ROACHES

Roaches carry bacteria, picked up from other decaying areas, and can transfer it to food surfaces in your home. Your family could possibly become sick from ingesting the bacteria if the roaches are not eliminated.

ANTS

Many ants can cause anaphylactic shock if a person is severely allergic to ant bites. Anaphylactic shock can be fatal if not treated quickly. Symptoms include extreme itching to vomiting and diarrhea. Someone experiences these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Tips to keep the invaders out:

  • caulking windows: especially in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture tends to build the most.
  • trimming vegetation: keep away from home
  • minimize clutter: removal of old boxes, stacks of paper, etc. to eliminate harborage areas.

In most cases, these pests tend to build up a resistance to store-bought insecticides. If you are experiencing these pests in your home, you should call a pest management professional. RCG Lawn & Pest Control offers quarterly pest management plans to assist you in keeping your home pest free! CALL TODAY for a FREE estimate. 904-316-0153

To Water or Not To Water…that is the question

During the summer, many people may wonder how much water their lawn needs. We are here to tell you what can happen when you water too much, not enough, and our recommendation for accurate water consumption for your lawn. We will also give you some tips on how to save money on your water bill.

Too Much

If you water too much or water at night, the water tends to stay at the top layer of the soil causing a fungus (see below). If your lawn begins to turn a yellowish color, chances are it has a fungus and needs to be treated.

Recommendation: When watering your grass, it is a good idea to water early in the morning so that the water is absorbed by the lawn during the heat of the day.delaware-maryland-pennsylvania-lawn-yard-grass-disease-rust2

Not Enough

Due to the afternoon storms, you may think that there is no need to water your grass for several days. However, this could not be further from the truth. If your lawn does not receive proper irrigation, an insect infestation can occur. One insect that loves a dry lawn is chinch bugs (see below).

Recommendation: We recommend that you water your lawn no more than two days a week at 60 minutes per zone.

Water Saving $$ Tips

  1. Check operation of sprinkler system on a weekly basis to prevent water waste on sidewalks and streets
  2. If you don’t have an irrigation system, place a timer on hose for proper water shut off
  3. Leave watering can outside to collect rain water to be recycled onto plants

If you notice your lawn has a fungus or suffering from chinch bug damage, RCG Lawn & Pest can come out and service your lawn. CALL TODAY for a FREE estimate! Stay tuned for more helpful tips next week…
